Cockermouth take third title with top four win

COCKERMOUTH, reformed only two years ago, have lifted their third title for this season.
After winning the John Smith’s Cumberland division two race and the Dale Campbell Savours Cup, they have now also won the division two top four play-off.
They defeated Lowca 32-16 in last Friday’s top four final played at the Copeland Stadium.
Lowca started brightly in each half, Dean Morgan crossing shortly after the kick-off and Andrew Harper nipping over early in the second period.
The underdogs also had the satisfaction of notching the last try of the game, Carl Ennis touching down, while Keith Campbell kicked two goals.
Otherwise, however, the game was completely Cockermouth’s and they were 22-6 ahead by the break.
Barla Great Britain centre John Patrick crossed twice, and Phil Bell, Liam Wild, Mark Haycock and Mark McMillin popped over, with Craig Fisher firing four goals.
Seaton, beaten last week by Ellenborough in the John Smith’s Cumberland League’s division one top four play-offs, exacted retribution with a stunning 5-2 victory in Saturday’s SJR Builders Cumberland Cup semi-final.
Seaton, the 2006/7 Cumberland champions, are building a fine young side under player/coach Jon Roper and have a solid defence with which to support their ambitions.
Elbra, meanwhile, boast arguably the best defence in the country and, in the circumstances, it was perhaps no surprise that not a single try was scored in a game played before a big crowd.
Seaton led 4-2 at half time, winger Duncan Moyles having landed a couple of penalties before stand-off Stephen Stoddart kicked a goal in reply.
And that was how it stayed until five minutes from time, when Roper slotted a drop goal over.
The home side’s win, in which Barla Great Britain U23 prop Steven Hodgson, second-row Brett Phillips and full back Kalum Philips were outstanding, was all the more noteworthy for having been achieved without four regulars who were at a wedding.
Elbra, who lacked Paul West, will lament having failed to register a try despite spending most of the second period deep in Seaton territory.
And the two sides meet yet again tomorrow when they contest the Amateur Cup final at Maryport’s Mealpot Road ground (3pm ko).
