Tony Nutbrown, 51, of Belle Vue South, is the winner of the prize. He collected it along with his partner, Pat Alderson, 54, a nursing assistant, earlier today.
The couple won £3,038,567 in Saturday’s Lotto Double Rollover jackpot after choosing the lucky numbers 7, 16, 17, 23, 29, 34.
Workers at the Spar shop on Hutton Way, Carlisle, confirmed today that the winning ticket had been bought on their premises.
The couple were officially unveiled as winners at Dalston Hall Hotel, near Carlisle, this morning. They were among four winners, sharing Saturday’s jackpot of £12,154,268.
Tony revealed this morning that he wasn't going to buy a lottery ticket but decided to buy three lucky dips when he went out to the Spar to buy some drinks.
He said he would like to go on holiday, buy a Jaguar and a new house.
Tony has two children and Pat, who works at the Cumberland Infirmary, has two children.
One of Tony's daughters went to a fortune teller in Hull on Saturday morning and she told her that a member of her family was going to win a fortune.
Their neighbours were the first to congratulate them.
Dawn Carruthers said: “I think it’s brilliant for them.
“It’s nice to see someone winning in the area. It just proves that it can happen.”
Sam Beattie, who lives next door to Tony and Pat, said: “Pat came onto the drive last night to tell us when I got back from Glasgow.
“I’m really pleased for them.”
The couple live in a three-bedroomed semi-detached house. A white van was parked in the driveway of their house today.
Tony joins a roll call of winners in Cumbria who have made their fortune on the big-money game.
Joe Tomlinson from Egremont was one of Cumbria’s first lottery winners in 1998 when he won more than £1m.
And Flimby teenager Callie Rogers was the second youngest person in the land to win when she picked up nearly £2m in July 2003, with her lucky numbers 1, 10, 17, 23, 29 and 35.
While lottery cash has drastically changed some lives, for others it has meant they stayed the same.
Down-to-earth Maryport couple Elizabeth and George Thompson chose not to splash out on a lavish lifestyle after they won £2.8m in 2001 – opting to buy a modest caravan as a family holiday home in Silloth instead.
But Elizabeth did give up her job as a care assistant while George quit his £150-a-week job at a seafood factory.
David Little, of Carlisle, won £3.4m on the lottery in 2002 but his prime concern was to find true love and someone to share his fortune with.
His dream came true when he met mum-of-two Alison Stewart, 38, while walking his dog near his former house in Etterby Park. The couple married in a £20,000 civil ceremony at the Inn on the Lake at Glenridding and honeymooned in Mauritius.
And Christmas came early for Margaret and Will Scott, of Brydekirk, Annan, when they won £4.4m in December 2003. Former brickie Will, 61, and Margaret, 63, were getting by on £200 a week before their win.
