Tributes have been paid to a west Cumbrian teaching assistant who died tragically on Saturday morning.
Sarah Elizabeth Jackson, of Aikbank Road, Whitehaven, was hit by a car as she walked down a remote road at Cleator Moor in the early hours.
The 35-year-old worked at Distington Community School as a senior teaching assistant in nursery and reception. The school closed yesterday because colleagues were too distraught to work.
Pupils from years one to six are back in school today, but the reception and nursery children are not back until tomorrow.
Former colleagues and pupils at the school left heartfelt tributes and flowers for their workmate, friend and teacher at the scene of the accident.
One simply read: “To my teacher.”
Other tribute to Mrs Jackson, who was married to Scott and believed to have a daughter, said: “Sarah, thanks for your happy memories. Always in our thoughts forever. Allan, Linda, Allan, Callum Beck.”
Another read: “Rest in peace Sarah, our love and thoughts are with you, Love Bennett family.”
And another: “Sarah, Love you mate.”
Mrs Jackson worked at St Mary’s School, Kells from 1992 for several years. She was known by her maiden name Sarah James.
Headteacher Susan Starkie said: “Sarah worked in the nursery, she was warm and friendly, great with the kids and a valued member of staff.”
Police said Mrs Jackson was struck by a blue Peugeot 306 as she walked along the B5295, between Keekle and Cleator Moor. The incident happened at Whinney Hill, close to the road’s junction at Mill Hill. The car was travelling in the direction of Cleator Moor.
Mrs Jackson was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven, but died from her injuries.
Police are appealing for a taxi driver who took a man and woman to the crash area from Tangier Street in Whitehaven to come forward.
The road was closed for six hours as officers investigated and was reopened at 9.40am.
A fatal collision inquiry has been launched and police are keen to speak to any witnesses, who can call them on 0845 3300247.
