Derby games

MARYPORT’S U8 and U9 sides popped down the road to Flimby on Monday and what a good couple of games it was.

First up were the U8s and it was Owen Hoyles who was first on the scoresheet after breaking through Flimby's defense giving the visitors the lead.

Some good defence work from Michael Winthrop and Daniel Penman made it difficult for Flimby to equalize and it took them about five minutes to get through but they eventually did.

Jordan Winthrop nearly gave Maryport back the lead but was tackled on the line while Kieran Birkett and Cameron Harker both kept Flimby out.

A good pass from J Winthrop set up Hoyles for his second of the match putting the visitors back in front.

Debutant Luke Wilson was having a blinder keeping Flimby away from the touch line, and Hoyles nearly got his hat-trick but was tackled just short of the line - 2-1 to Maryport at half-time.

The second half was just as good and with a good strong start from Flimby. Maryport defense was tested and it was Richardson and Hetherington that kept them out.

M Winthrop went over after a half-pitch run but Flimby soon pulled one back and just like before some good defending from both sides kept the game in the middle of the pitch.

It was Alex Barton who broke through to give Maryport a two-point lead but Flimby pulled one back nearly straight away to make the score 4-3.

Birkett nearly made it 5-3 but was tackled just short of the line, but it was Hoyles getting his hat-trick that finally gave the visitors the two-points lead and the win at 5-3 in the last move of the game.

The U9s were next up and it was Flimby who scored the first two tries after going through Maryport’s defense, but Jordan Winthrop soon pulled one back making it 2-1 to the hosts.

Flimby went over twice more despite some good defending from Daniel Penman and Ross Barton and it was Barton who went over Flimby's try line making the score 4-2.

Katie Dobson nearly pulled another one back but was tackled just short of the line and going over for a fifth time Flimby made it 5-2 at half-time.

Maryport came out after the break and despite some good flowing rugby just couldn't get through Flimby's defence and Flimby soon pulled out to 8-2.

Maryport’s defence was yet again tested and Flimby nearly went over again but Lewis and Holyoake kept them out. A good pass from Hoyles put Brad Thompson through to pull another one back for Maryport.

Two quick tries from Flimby soon made the scoreline 10-3 and despite this Maryport kept digging away at Flimby’s defense and it nearly paid off for Barton.

But it was Katie Dobson who did go over three times to get her hat-trick, the last try being an excellent set making the scoreline 10-6, but yet Flimby went over twice more making the final score 12-6 to Flimby.
