We’ll always be a selling club

Reading the interviews with former Carlisle United owner Fred Story and new chief executive David Allen it is obvious that Carlisle United are at a sustainable level in Division One.

John Ward: Stability

But promotion to the Championship will have to be financed by higher attendances and outside investment.

Of course, fans demand progress each season and the signing of better players to make this possible.

Carlisle United will always be a selling club as its location means that players will move to larger clubs where the money is.

Maybe United have it right with the credit crunch meaning there will be fewer fans through the gate as football is downgraded in people’s spending.

I feel the opportunity to rebuild Brunton Park has been missed as the costs have spiralled and now don’t make economic sense.

So it looks like a season when the Blues will be happy to remain at their present level and the reason why manager John Ward was brought to the club will be clearer – stability.
