Moss Bay carnival is a monster day out

The first Moss Bay Carnival in eight years has been hailed a success by organisers.
Alyson Hodgson, organiser of the Workington carnival said it had been worth the wait and the carnival went ahead without any hitches.
She said: “We didn’t think the weather was going to hold out for us. We ended up waiting until 12pm to see what it was like before we went ahead.
“Everyone really enjoyed it. We had 65 people in the parade, and there were hundreds watching.
“We got some sponsorship to get a monster music workshop down.
They built a musical instrument from bits of scrap metal and shopping trolleys that children could play.
They loved it. Everyone expected a brass band, but because we changed the date of the carnival we couldn’t get it. But the monster music workshop saved the day.”
The floats included the carnival queen, rose queen, fairy queen, and the visiting fairy from Seaton, flower girl. The Moss Bay queen, king, and snow queen arrived in cars.
Local pensioner Rodney Bowers entertained by dressing up as a clown. And a group of Quality Street girls wore costumes made from chocolate wrappers.
Judging took place between 12.30pm and 1pm.
The carnival started at The Lonning, next to the Workington Zebras rugby ground on Annie Pit Lane.
Moss Bay councillor Barbara Cannon, Workington mayor Bill Bacon, Stella Kent and an Age Concern member judged the floats.
Cheerleaders, decorated prams and people in fancy dress took part in the parade along Mossbay Road, Church Street, Salisbury Street, Casson Road, Moorbanks Road, Cusack Crescent, Iredale Crescent and Cain Street, before finishing back at The Lonning.
