Teen Shackley set to make his debut in NL1 for Whitehaven

Whitehaven teenager Marc Shackley will step up for his NL1 debut in Sunday’s vital clash with Leigh – and with fellow reserve-grade starlet Danny Barker starting the Hilton Park clash in the back-row, boss Ged Stokes is placing his faith in youth as he looks to cement a play-off place.
A point is virtually certain to be enough to guarantee a top-six finish in Stokes’ first season in charge, and he says he had no hesitation in giving his youngsters a chance to shine.
“We had the opportunity to look at a few players before the signing deadline, but I looked at what we’re trying to achieve at the club, and the players we have here are perfectly capable,” the coach, right, said, today.
“I have every faith that the youngsters will come through for us. We are starting to see the benefits of young players coming through the system.
“Marc Shackley has a future in rugby league, as long as he keeps his nose to the grindstone. He’s good on the ball and plays his weight and can certainly be a handful, at prop or second-row. Danny Barker also has all the attributes to be a very good player. All the players know what to expect when they come in to the side. There are no free rides. Everybody has to do their bit.”
Shackley played in the Northern Rail Cup win over Halifax in March, before Stokes joined the club, but is yet to feature in NL1.
Widnes’ win at Sheffield last night means that the Eagles, in seventh, would have to win their final league match against visitors Dewsbury next week by a huge margin – and Stokes’ men lose their final two games by big scores – to overhaul the Cumbrians.
“Playing better opposition brings the best out of our team,” added Stokes.
Haven will be without half-back Tane Manihera (flu) and prop Ryan McDonald at Hilton Park.
