Haven duo set to miss play-offs

HAVEN were left feeling hard done after an RFL tribunal banned two of their players – but let a Leigh star walk free.
Graeme Mattinson will now miss all of Haven’s play-off campaign – only becoming available if they reach the NL1 Grand Final – after he was handed a three-match ban for kicking out against a Leigh player at Hilton Park.
Prop Scott Teare will also be out of contention for the next trip to Leigh, as he was handed a two- match ban for punching in the same game two weeks ago.
Then there was some rough justice for the club as Leigh prop Andy Hobson was found sending off sufficient for his part in a tackle that saw Gregg McNally taken from the field.
There was one bright spot for Haven as Andy Gorski, who was also charged with a high tackle from the clash, was also found sending off sufficient.
Haven director, Mike Graham, who spoke for the players at the disciplinary panel, was disappointed with the leniency shown to Hobson.
He said: “I find the Hobson decision bizarre when in my opinion it was a very nasty tackle on Gregg McNally which could have incurred a serious injury and I am surprised at the tribunal decision.
“I was pleased that Andy Gorski got off because it was just a very robust tackle.
“In terms of Scott and Graeme, the Leigh player lying on the ground was kicking out excessively and in doing so caught Graeme and his reaction was to strike back, which was not acceptable as well, but there was a lot of provocation in the first instance.
“If the Leigh player had just got up instead of looking for a holding down offence then the whole incident would not have happened.”
Teare may face further problems as he must wait and see if he is to go before the disciplinary panel again, after being sent off at the Recre on Sunday, during the win over Widnes.
Haven travel to Hilton Park, to face Leigh again, in the first round of the play-offs on September 7.
