Winning start for champions

CUMBERLAND ARL champions Ellenborough made a winning start to the new season on Wednesday night.
In a scrappy game against Broughton Red Rose the division one title holders came out 12-0 victors.
Paul McGee opened the scoring with a penalty and tries followed by Phil Brown – converted by Barrie Murdock – and Paul Southward.
Seaton had a good win at home to Glasson, 28-10. Richard George bagged a brace for Seaton, with Kevin Wilson, Tom Curwen and Duncan Moyle also picking up tries, and Moyle tagging on four goals.
Glasson’s reply came through tries for Matthew Johnson, John Fiddler and a Brad Nixon conversion.
Maryport led 10-4 at Distington at half-time but let their lead slip away in the second spell to go down 21-14.
Trevor Dryden scored Distington’s first-half tries with further touchdowns for the village side coming from Daniel Dryden, Nicky Burgess and Shaun Adams, with Scott George kicking a conversion, a penalty and a drop-goal.
John Dollochin, Sean Crozier and Jonathan Dawes all touched down for Maryport with Miguel Blanco-Charters landing one conversion.
Wath Brow picked up an opening win away at Cockermouth 22-4.
Ryan Amor got a try and three goals for the Copeland side while Martin Thompson, Karl Olstrum and Craig Dixon collected a try apiece.
Cockermouth’s lone try came through Liam Wild in the second half.
Kells beat Hensingham 34-32.
