TEENAGE shooting star Gary Madine will present his Carlisle United shirt to his uncle who missed his first senior goal for the club on Saturday.

Madine’s uncle Paul Roley usually brings the highly-rated young striker’s kid brother Ciaron, eight, to Brunton Park from the family’s Tyneside home.

The pair hadn’t missed a match all season up until Saturday’s 4-1 win over Yeovil when Madine struck in the 90th minute – five minutes after coming on as a sub for hat-trick hero Danny Graham.

But the big, powerful 18-year-old forward – dubbed the new Duncan Ferguson by his agent David Eyres – plans to make sure his uncle receives a memento of his nephew’s big day by presenting him with the shirt he wore on his big day.

He said: “I told my uncle not to bother coming over because I knew I was going to be on the bench.

“I need to get the top I scored in and give it to my uncle since he didn’t make it.

“My first goal was a long time in coming but then I had a bad training session on Monday so that knocked my confidence back down again!”

It was a double celebration for Madine, who this summer signed a one-year extension on his existing contract to keep him at Brunton Park until 2011, after getting off the mark on Saturday.

He was finally able to let his hair down after his 18th birthday celebrations had to be put on hold the previous Sunday because he was due to play in the Carling Cup tie at QPR two days later.

But he admitted Saturday’s last-gasp goal – a scuffed shot – will probably go down as the worst goal of his career.

He said: “Cleveland Taylor cut inside and beat his man, and set it up for me. Michael Bridges was shouting for me to send it over but I was having none of that. I side footed it and it bobbled and went in. It was still special.

“I’m pleased with how things are going. The manager isn’t expecting too much too soon and I respect that. They weren’t expecting me to make as many first team appearances.

“The lads are spot on and always playing jokes and I’m really enjoying it.”
