League championship going down to the wire
Last updated 11:48, Thursday, 04 September 2008
GOING into the penultimate week of the season only one team, Penrith II, remained undefeated. Needless to say, this record duly disappeared at Appleby where the home side won by three wickets.
This sets an intriguing situation at the top of the table as second place Caldbeck beat Braithwaite to close the gap to two points.
Penrith will travel to Stainton for their final game, where the home side clung to a point, and can possibly avoid relegation if they win this last match.
Above them are Staffield and Nunwick, both four points ahead, after the former lost at Carlisle and the latter were thwarted by the weather, after looking on track to beat Edenhall.
In Division One, Cockermouth II found themselves in the unaccustomed position of having to bat out for a draw at a resurgent Shap, but with Kirkby Stephen losing at Wigton II, it was enough to see them promoted as champions.
Carleton’s Richard Bamber scored the only century of the weekend and his team’s win puts them in second place.
Having finished their season, they will have to await the results of Kirkby’s last two games to see if they stay in the same position.
Wetheral’s chances of staying in the Second Division required a win at Appleby, but the opportunity disappeared after six overs as the rain intervened.
There was a similar situation in the Third Division. Rockcliffe and Lanercost II both won comfortably on Saturday, and met on Sunday in their last match of the season, with a promotion place at stake.
Not even one over was possible leaving the latter as the disappointed team. Rockcliffe finish on top, but only by two points and can therefore be overtaken by Penrith Academy.
