Glasson beat town rivals and champions

GLASSON caused a big upset in Wednesday night’s Cumberland League division one clashes, as they defeated town rivals and current champions Ellenborough.

Glasson used home advantage to full effect as they held an 8-6 lead at half-time and kept the two-point advantage until the end, winning 12-10.

Ryan Pattinson, Matthew Johnson and James Moore were the try scorers for the victorious Glasson side.

Ellenborough replied with tries for Dean Scholey and Stephen Stoddart, the latter also adding one goal.

In a night of close games Broughton Red Rose and Distington were locked at the break 6-6.

But it was Broughton who had more fuel left in the tank to come home 18-10 victors.

Richard Harrington, Matthew Woodcock and Brett Hill all crossed the line for the home side, with Mark Walker tagging on three goals.

Distington had tries from Nicky Burgess and Scott George, who also landed one penalty goal.

The last match to be played was at Maryport where they saw off the challenge of newly promoted Cockermouth to win 24-16.

Former Cockermouth player/coach Craig Fisher kicked four goals against his old club to help the Maryport cause.

Jonathan Dawes, Andrew Cartwright, Michael McMullen and Daniel Rooney were also on the scoresheet with a try apiece.

Cockermouth’s points came courtesy of tries for Mark McMillin, Matthew Nawrockyj and Liam Wild with a goal apiece for Richard McMillin and Ian McDowell.

Clashes at Seaton, where Kells were due to visit, and Wath Brow, who were to host Hensingham, were both called off due to waterlogged pitches.

On Tuesday evening Lowca kept their lead at the top of division two, after a tough home victory over a battling Frizington.

Frizington were just six points behind at the break but Lowca pulled away to record a 36-20 victory and the second win of their campaign.

Richard Haile led the way for Lowca with two tries and three goals. David Scott also touched down with a brace, while Lee Allen, Tony Tinkler and Stuart Ennis also crossed the whitewash and Keith Campbell added a further goal.

Wayne Burns, Kurt Lee and Peter Fowler replied with tries for Frizington, while Dean Armstrong landed four goals.

Salterbeck are now hot on Lowca’s heels after their second win, this time a convincing 42-4 victory over Great Clifton.

They have a points difference of 68 with Lowca’s being 71, so it is all close at this early stage.

Ross Cape and Paul Melville both bagged braces for Salterbeck, with Jason Graham, Terry McDowell and James Motum also touching down. Lee Jardine was on target with seven goals.

Clifton’s points came from a lone try courtesy of David Liddington.

Kells A nilled new boys Lowca A, putting 30 points on them to remain unbeaten as well.

Ethan Scowcroft, Darren Seeds, Steve McMillan, Liam Broach and Darren Wilson all bagged tries for Kells A, with Wilson also slotting over one goal. Ross Gainford added four more goals to the tally.

Village side Flimby have had a superb start to their season and they completed their second win with a great showing against Egremont.

The two sides were locked at 6-6 at the break but Flimby had enough in the tank to just edge the game 18-12.

Flimby’s tries came courtesy of David Torley, Luke Grima and Gary Steele. Gary McGraffin wrapped up the scoring with three conversions.

Egremont crossed for two tries with Christian Bailey and Ben Walker getting on the scoresheet and Warren Stainton landing two goals.

Seaton A collected their first points of the season when they reversed their fixture to play at Maryport A and won 34-24.

Alex McDonald led the way for Seaton with a brace of tries, alongside touchdowns for James Mackay, Mark Tubman, Gareth Morris and Phil Armstrong. Mark Dixon kicked five goals.

Maryport A saw tries for Mark Bethwaite, Lewis Nixon, Scott Greenhow, Michael McMullen and Martin Harrison. Ben Waugh added two conversions.
