Kauko rides hard for McAllan

WORKINGTON skipper Kauko Nieminen top-scored in Sunday’s farewell meeting at Glasgow for former Comets rider David McAllan.

Nieminen had four wins and a third in his five rides for 13 points as he headed a team which was dubbed Workington but bore little resemblance to the Comets.

Recent signing Richard Lawson was the only other member of the Comets ‘squad’ included in the team. He’s likely to ride next season as one of the reserves.

He scored two points from his five rides – finishing third on a couple of occasions Glasgow won the three-year event with 42 points from Workington on 35 and then Edinburgh on 31.

McAllan rode for all three clubs and also Berwick in his career which ended last October when he broke vertebrae in a track smash against Birmingham.

Workington won’t ride again properly until next Saturday when they host Newcastle in what should have been their final Premier League match.

But they now have to fit in the match with Stoke, postponed on Friday night, and that will be raced on Friday, September 19 at Derwent Park.
