The talented Andy Murray storming into the final of the US Open, our test team’s demolition of the South Africans in the one-day cricket tournament, plus our athletes returning in triumph from the Olympics with a sackful of medals, all adds up to a revival in the fortunes of our sportsmen and women.

I hope this will spread to the international soccer scene where England in particular are still firing on one cylinder and need to show the new manager what they really are capable of.
