New club Dearham hit eight in their opening match

THE new West Cumbria Junior Football League season has kicked off, though quite a few games have been postponed because of water-logged pitches.

Dearham 8

Dearham Rangers, a new team in West Cumbria soccer, made their U10 league debut with an emphatic 8-0 away victory.

An all-round outstanding team performance found them cruising into a 4-0 half-time lead after a superb long-range goal from Lewis Brown, a well-placed shot from Jonathan Mcallister and two brilliant headers from Robbie Holt.

In the second half Rangers went on to dominate with some outstanding football.

Two goals from Macauley Hannah and a goal each from Aiden Murdoch and Holt sealed their win.

Netherhall 3

Bransty 1

Craig Smith opened the scoring for Netherhall in this U14 encounter played in a strong wind.

John Mulgrew added another for Netherhall but Bransty managed to pull one back before half-time.

In the second half David Miller added a third for Netherhall to put the game beyond doubt.

Cockermouth 0

Whitehaven Miners 2

There were plenty of scoring opportunities for both sides in the opening match of the U11 season between Cockermouth and Whitehaven Miners and Miners were able to find the back of the net twice in the last few minutes to seal the game.

Until then Cockermouth’s defensive team were impossible to break down, with Kate Spiers playing well.

Jordan Young had the best chance midway through the first half, but it was saved by the goalie.

Miners forced a couple of corners which were planted in the box well by Lewis Jolly and Matthew Sempill, but no-one could find the back of the net.

Then just before half-time Ben Graham crossed for Patrick Cowman to squeeze past the goalie.

The second half started with shots on or just off target for both sides, but no joy.

Cockermouth looked as if they were going to equalise a few times late on, forcing excellent saves from Thomas Fowler.

Then Jordan Milburn's fresh legs were put to good effect, creating an opportunity for Sam Starkey to convert. Moments later Starkey put Miners safe by cutting off and netting a Cockermouth goal kick.

The teams were evenly matched in this U10 game in the first half and were unable to break the deadlock in good end-to-end play.

Whitehaven pushed on in the second half but Cockermouth defenders Marcus Stables and David Thomas kept Cockermouth in contention.

Cockermouth eventually took the lead when Whitehaven’s keeper parried a Stables shot and Shay Tinnion was on hand to net the rebound.

Whitehaven pressured Cockermouth in the closing stages and beat Cockermouth keeper Jordan Eland with a good cross excellently headed in by Conor Edwards.

Yellow Star 4

Workington Yellow Star – formerly Seaton – got their U16 division one season off to a flying start with a 4-1 win away at Whitehaven AFC.

The game didn't start so well for Yellow Star as they conceded an early goal.

But they regrouped and were on level terms within minutes from a well-taken goal from Antony Zarjac.

Yellow Star settled well and played some nice football on the Astroturf.

Jon Richardson scored next with a thunderbolt from outside the area and Yellow Star never looked back.

Jamie Bramley scored what was probably the best goal of the day. The ball was worked up from the back after a Whitehaven attack broke down, it was then fed through midfield to the front trio of Zarjac, Richardson and Bramley, who all combined well with one touch play to have Bramley slot home into a vacant net.

Richardson got his brace of goals just before half-time with an inch-perfect chip over the advancing keeper.

In the second half Whitehaven rallied but Yellow Star were always in control with pleasing performances across the entire squad, particularly from left-back Josh Walker and keeper and captain Bobby Mattinson.
