Rooney gets nod from fellow players

Cleator captain David Rooney has been honoured by his fellow players in the North Lancs & Cumbria Cricket League. Rooney was voted as the Ppremier Division’s players’ player of the year with five first place votes.

And the Cumberland county star is also the top amateur bowler in the division with 48 wickets costing just over 13 runs each. He is also the top amateur wicket-taker.

Keswick pro Dinuk Hettiarachchi is the top professional bowler with 55 wickets at an average of just over nine runs each and again is the top wicket taker.

The Premier Division’s under-21 player of the year heads to Penrith with Alex Atkinson taking the honours with five first place votes, just ahead of Cockermouth’s Greg Platten.

And Whitehaven’s Gareth Coward was also rewarded for his skills behind the stumps with the Winning Line Trophies premier division wicketkeeper award for his 13 catches and nine stumpings.

Furness pro Majid Jehangir headed the division’s batting table with an average of just under 82 and was top runs scorer with 896. Dalton’s Justin Quint was the top amateur in the averages and the run scoring, bagging 574 runs at an average of just over 52.

In division one, Wigton amateur Bobby Sherlock topped the batting averages with 640 runs at an average of exactly 64.

He was also named the division’s players’ player of the year for his consistent form, with four first place votes.

Andrew Barr’s 126 for Appleby Eden was the highest individual innings.

Egremont’s Richard Booth was the top wicket taker with 47 victims and also had the best individual match return with his 9-31 against Appleby Eden.

Lindal’s Colin Knight won the bowling averages with 45 wickets costing less than five runs apiece.

Workington Seconds also picked up an award through keeper Simon Bragg. He lifted the Malcolm Beaty division one wicketkeeper award for his 15 catches and eight stumpings.

Division Two champions Seascale lifted some honours. as Daniel Lee took the bowling award for the third year running, taking 34 wickets at just over 11 runs each. The all-rounder’s 207 not out against Duddon was also the highest innings in the division, a new record.

Brother Clayton Lee, the side’s opening bowler, had the best individual match return with 7-11 against Ulverston and Dave Stubbings was the top run scorer with 635.
