Five days and counting as salmon season comes to an end

Including today, there are only five more days of the River Eden salmon season left.

Fish are now being caught throughout the system and although there are lots of coloured fish which should be returned there are still numbers of fresh run silver fish entering the river.

During the last couple of weeks one of the best catches at Warwick Hall, was taken by Andy Brown who was spinning. After landing fish of 16lbs and 13lbs in the Gravel Bed, he landed another 16-pounder at the Garden Wall.

John ‘Hot Rod’ Hindle landed four in a day using a Flying C. They were fish of four, six and 12lbs in the Rushes and an eight-pounder in Howards Hole.

Vin Astles fished a Toby in Jackies Stream to take a 14-pounder, and Ken Pallister also landed a fish of similar size whilst spinning in the House Pool.

Ian Blackett took a 10-pounder on the fly, and Keith Ogden landed a brace, a six-and-a-half pound fish pounder in the Battery and a 4lb fish in the Rushes.

On Tuesday, Andrew Robertson landed a six-pounder in the Rushes on a Flying C.

Anglers fishing the Low House Estate beats of the river Eden have also faired well.

The Armathwaite beat producing fly caught salmon of 10lb and nine-and-a-half pound fish to David Savage, a four- pounder to John Smith and on Monday a 15 pounder to Alaister Nellis on a Rapala.

The Carr Nook beat produced a fly caught 10 pounder and a 12-and-a-half-pounder on a Toby to Jeff Stainton.

John McClay used the same method to land an eight-pounder and Alan Calder fished a Rapala to take a four pounder.

Mike Noble landed a five- pounder using a Toby.

On the Low House Beat Jim McKay caught fish of five and seven pounds on a Flying C and 12 and eight-pounders on a Rapala.

Joseph Huddleston and Alan Metcalfe both fished Toby's to land fish of six and four-and-a-half pounds.

Paul Marston landed a fly caught 14½ pounder, John McClay used the same tactics to tempt an eight-pounder.

John Chilton had a Rapala caught brace of 11 and eight pounds.

Charlie Eggerton landed five- pounder on the fly on Saturday and on Monday John McClay landed a 16-pounder on a Toby.

Donald McLean, from Lennoxtown took the £1,000 first prize at the 2008 Broom Series Final at Broom Fishery near Annan on Sunday.

Donald drew peg 62 on Queensberry Water and beat 19 other 'A' final qualifiers landing 10lb 10oz of carp and chub, plus a 2lb barbel.

The cash prize and winner's trophy were presented by Haylie Boardman (12) and Kayley Crosbie (15), who were representing sponsors, Queensberry Arms Hotel of Annan.

The 'B' final was won by Dumfries and Galloway lad Joshua Trueman, who at the age of 14 became the youngest person to win a series final at the Broom.

His prize was a £500 and a state of the art Space Station Box and Shuttle, supplied by Preston Innovations.

Winner of the 'C' Final was Douglas Garmory who won a Broom Tackle Box gift voucher.

The final match of the Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club Summer League at Borwick Fishery saw Carlisle's Pete Brown league leader prior to the final, won both the match and the league in some style.

On a calm, bright day, most anglers adopted pole and paste tactics. Pete fished the waggler with pellet to land 39lb 8 oz of carp.

Second was Andy Davidson with 24lb 13oz and Colin Griffin was third with 22lb 11oz.

Colin Wilson of Alston did well on his first visit to Hadrian Fisheries at Haydon Bridge landing a seven-and-a-half pound rainbow trout using a sedge and a two-pound blue trout on a Black Buzzer.

The second ‘European Shark Week’ is approaching and as part of the activities the Shark Alliance has organised an online petition that takes just 30 seconds to complete. See http://www.sharktrust.org/petition/

This year is truly pivotal for European shark policy.

We need to protect threatened sharks and help stop finning (the wasteful slicing off of shark's fins and tossing the body at sea) now!

The EU commission is currently developing a community plan of action for sharks and we have a golden opportunity to help improve the health of our shark populations and related fisheries.

Most populations of European sharks and related rays are overfished

One third are threatened with extinction.

Most EU shark and ray fishing remains unregulated and scientific advice for catch limits is rarely heeded.

The EU ban on "finning" is the weakest in the world.
