Penrith's Birkbeck misses out on race title by four seconds

Wigton Motor Club’s event at Kames in Scotland was the decider for the TJ Services Northern Speed Championship and 60 odd cars battled it out for 2008 honours in the various classes.
None was so intense as in the M2 class after Penrith’s Colin Birkbeck had fought a season-long tussle in his Caterham 7 with Wigton MC member Peter Garforth in his much more powerful racing car, the Hawke ATCO.
Sadly power is all in speed events and despite some superb driving, Colin just couldn’t find those extra seconds over Peter and lost the championship by a slender margin of four seconds.
For those of a rallying disposition, the Cheviot Stages Rally at Otterburn is on October 19th and one of the famous rallies, the Illuminations Rally based in Morecambe takes place on October 25-26.
Started in 1955, it was a must-do rally in the 60s and 70s and I well remember luminaries such as Ron Palmer and Tony Mason taking part as it was a classic navigation rally which used the roads in the Morecambe area and the Lakes District.
It still does and if you want to enter, spactate or know more, log onto info@morecambecarclub
On October 26 there is rallycross action at Croft and as time seems truncated these days I can’t believe that on November 9 the VSCC is holding their famous Lakeland Trial in the Lakes District which uses the awesome climb above Honister slate quarry and several of our forests.
