Edinburgh City end Gretna's Challenge Cup hopes

Gretna's 100 per cent record came to an abrupt end at home to Edinburgh City in the third round of the SFA South Challenge Cup.

Gretna dominated the first half and should have gone in at half-time with more than the 1-0 lead, secured by a spectacular individual effort in the 17th minute from captain Tony Nicholson, who rounded a number of City player before slotting the ball home.

The home domination continued in the second half until the incident which changed the game after 55 minutes.

When Gretna keeper John Jamieson clashed with one of the City players, as they both went for the ball, most people believed the referee had stopped the game.

However, Jamieson then retaliated and the referee showed the Gretna keeper the red card. He then awarded a penalty, to the obvious bemusement of both sides and the wrath of the 120-strong crowd.

Steven Rudd put on the keeper’s top and came close to stopping the spot kick.

Gretna’s spirits did not dampen however and the 10-man side continued to compete, even when the visitors added another mid-way through the half.

As the home side tired, City added a third just before the final whistle.
