Poor catch in the rough

MARYPORT & District Sea Anglers’ Club held their annual October Open on Sunday.

The match was pegged along Maryport promenade and timed to fish the flooding tide. At this time of year there should be a reasonable chance of catching some cod but, so far this season, they have been very scarce.

At the start of the match, conditions were quite favourable but they rapidly deteriorated and many competitors withdrew after a couple of hours.

Under these conditions the catches were predictably very disappointing. From the entry of 42 seniors and 12 juniors, just seven anglers weighed in.

The catch was a cod, two plaice, two flounder, two dab and a rockling for a combined weight of 6lb 2½oz.

Host club member Neil Wilkinson had the top catch, a plaice and a flounder for 1lb 11oz.

Bill Lindfield, of Greasby, was next with a 1lb ¼oz flounder which was also the heaviest fish.

In the junior section, the only catch was the only cod of the day taken by Rory Campbell of Maryport.

Results – Heaviest fish: 1, Bill Lindfield (Greasby), flounder, 1lb ¼oz.

Heaviest catch: 1, Neil Wilkinson (Maryport), two fish, 1lb 11oz; 2, Lindfield, one fish, 1lb ¼oz; 3, Paul Eppy (Workington), one fish, 11oz; 4, Barry Heslop (Maryport), one fish, 9½oz; 5, Steve Litt (Wigton), one fish, 6½oz; 6, Tom Whitehead (Maryport), 3¼oz.

Zone winners: zone one, Wilkinson; zone two, Whitehead.

Juniors – Heaviest catch and heaviest fish: 1, Rory Campbell (Maryport), one fish, 1lb 9oz.
