TEENAGE running star Laura Park returned to the fells on Saturday and smashed the ladies’ record on the Wasdale Screes race.
And her Ellenborough Athletics Club team-mate Ricky Lightfoot was the overall winner, beating the men’s record for the run he set last year.
The 5.5-mile Wasdale Screes includes fast road sections and steep and technically difficult rough terrain.
Park, back on the fells after a successful summer of track running, clocked 47 minutes 17 seconds, taking five minutes off the record.
The 16-year-old finished fifth overall – and first woman – leaving many talented senior male competitors trailing in her wake.
For Lightfoot, who clocked 40.48, taking over a minute off his own record, the race was prefect preparation for his run for England in an international in Italy this weekend.
And there were good runs at Wasdale for other Ellenborough members.
Brian Taylor, competing in his first fell race for some time, found the course to his liking, finishing strongly in fourth in 44.43.
The evergreen Jacky Winn, the current English fell running veteran over 55 years champion, came eighth in 48.31.
The combined results of these four athletes were good enough to secure the winning team title and the accompanying £100 prize money.
Other Ellenborough finishers were Nick Rea 15th in 52.21, Wayne Jackson 19th in 54.03, Chris Hindmoor 26th in 56.20 and Andy Reid, competing as a Vet 50 in his first ever fell race, at 33rd.
