Kids get something to chew on – safety
Last updated 11:25, Monday, 10 November 2008
ROAD safety is on the menu for primary school pupils across Cumbria this week.
A special menu offering meals such as ‘traffic light salad’ and ‘belt up in the back’ bolognaise will be dished up to youngsters this week.
The promotion, being run by Cumbria County Council, coincided with today’s start of national road safety week. Each school has been given the option of choosing which day they run the dishes for their diners.
It is hoped the initiative will help get the message through about taking care on the roads, particularly during the winter months when darker evenings and bad weather make pedestrians especially more vulnerable.
Posters promoting the ‘Kids’ Kitchens’ have also been given to the county’s primary schools together with credit card-sized road safety codes.
Lollipop patrollers have also be invited to eat with pupils at their local schools.
Alan Clark, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member responsible for road safety, said: “Getting the message about road safety across to children is vitally important, and the Kids’ Kitchen promotion is a way of doing this in an informal and entertaining way.
“I’m sure that as well as learning potentially life-saving information, pupils will have a good time and be able to give more thought to how to keep themselves safe.”
