England boss Tony Smith set for Cumbria visit

England boss Tony Smith is to visit Whitehaven for a coaching session in one of his first commitments after returning from World Cup duty in Australia.
The former Leeds Rhinos boss will take a session on December 8 at Cumbria Sports Academy, with coaches from the professional and amateur games invited.
The Aussie is no stranger to west Cumbria, having had a spell at Workington Town during his playing career.
Alan Davidson, club and coach development officer for Cumbria, said: “I’ve been trying for a while to get him here, though obviously he’s been preparing for the World Cup.
“He played for Workington Town and obviously has fond memories of the area. The session is open to all qualified coaches and those working toward a qualification.”
Davidson reckons Smith is capable of pulling off a shock win when England face New Zealand in Saturday’s semi.
“It’s obviously going to be close and selection is vital,” he added.
“We have a good shot, as we proved against New Zealand in the first-half last week. We know we can compete for 40 minutes. We now have to do it for 80.”
A three-hour positive coaching workshop will be held at Egremont on Wednesday next week, from 6.30pm, at a cost of £5. For details on both courses, phone Davidson on 07515 753675 or e-mail alan.davidson@rfl.uk.com
Meanwhile, Mat Gardner, who was recently linked with Whitehaven, has joined Super League Harlequins.
Haven had shown interest after he left promoted Salford, but boss Ged Stokes admitted that the Barrow-born winger was well outside the NL1 club’s price range.
Quins coach Brian McDermott described the signing as further proof that young talent is drawn to playing in the capital.
“He, along with a few more have made a decision to give it a go down here in London – and we are looking forward to working with him,” said the coach, who recently recruited ex-Haven centre Mick Nanyn.
