Workington Town powerhouse Dean Burgess has admitted he would love to continue as captain in 2009.

Burgess, who took over the role from the injured Jamie Beaumont part way through last season, is keen to have another stint in charge.

But the young forward, who is returning from injury himself, is waiting to see where he figures in coach Dave Rotheram’s plans.

“It was a great honour to be captain and I would like to continue but I will have to wait and see what Dave’s plans are,” said Burgess.

The 24-year-old ruptured a muscle back in July which kept him out of Town’s end of season campaign but he is now keen to get back to action.

However, he is unsure whether he will figure in Town’s friendly with the Australian Fijians on November 30.

“My arm is alright now and I am just looking forward to getting back into training,” added Burgess

“I have got a lot more training to do than everybody else with missing the back end of the season so I will bide my time and have a chat with Dave about when I will play.”

Burgess, who signed a new one-year deal with the club back in August, is pleased to see some of the new young faces that have come on board in the close season.

He said: “They are all good young players and our average age will be about 23, so hopefully they will bring in some enthusiasm.

“We will really come together in pre-season. We missed a few key players last term and we have got to stand up and be counted this time.”
