Wind blows away the cod

THE North West Sea Angling league fished a match on Sunday night at Lowca, fishing two hours each side of low water from Parton slipway to Crag Toes. Forty-eight anglers – 42 seniors and six juniors – took part.
Sunday had been flat calm all day but as the match started a light north-easterly wind picked up and the cod, which were being caught from all over the match length the previous night, disappeared and anglers were only catching dab, whiting, rockling and the odd dog fish.
The one exception was Rockhoppers’ Steve Smith who landed an excellent Conger eel of 16lb 15¾oz. He also had a dab and a whiting, giving him a bag weight of 17lb 14¾oz.
Runner-up was Tom Whitehead, also from Rockhoppers, with a dog fish and three whiting for 3lb 12¾oz and third place went to Ricky Holt from Maryport with four rockling, two dab and a flounder for 2lb 12¾oz.
The team event was won by Rockhoppers with 24lb 5¾oz, second was Maryport with 6lb 9½oz and third was Workington with 5lb 5oz.
