YET another young racing talent is being nurtured by Ellenborough Athletic Club.
At the Gateshead International Cross Country races on Saturday the club’s Hannah Bethwaite won the U14 race.
Up against top quality athletes from all over Britain, her success underlined her talent which last year took her to the U13 title at Gateshead.
And the club’s triumphs continued with 16-year-old Laura Park racing to sixth, overall in the U20 girls’ race.
Park was second within her age group, only 40 seconds down on the winner who was three years her senior.
This race will be used to select the team that will represent Great Britain in the European Cross Country Championships.
Athletes are still waiting to hear if they’ve made the team.
And there was even more success for the club in the Brampton to Carlisle 10-mile road race which attracted over 600 runners.
Ellenborough’s Ricky Lightfoot was once again in the mix and eventually added the Brampton race to his portfolio of victories.
Lightfoot sat in with the leading group up until the ninth mile where he changed gear to ease away for a 10-second victory in a time of 53 minutes 29 seconds.
Jacky Winn also representing Ellenborough and Vet55 finished in a staggering 32nd position in 59.50, one of the fastest Vet55 times in Britain this year.
Other Ellenborough finishers: Gerard Mulgrew (146th, 67.07); Karen Southwell (416th, 23rd woman, 81.01; Paul Wilson (430th, 82.01); Judith Wilson (500th 87.41).
