Workington school's fitness challenge

PUPILS at a Workington school slipped on their running trainers and straddled their bikes to take part in a sponsored fitness challenge.

The pupils from Stainburn School and Science College took part in a gruelling three-mile mountain bike ride and cross-country run.

Cyclists and runners followed a course from the school to Schoose Wood, through Curwen Park and back to the school.

The sessions were run in the morning and afternoon every day and were open to all year groups.

Tom Walker, 13, who took part in a cross-country run, said: “Most of the pupils have been sponsored at least £10 so we’re hoping the final sum will be huge.

“It’s important to offer kids a chance to do something like this because it’s good for their fitness and also helps us raise money for the school.”

Pupils were also offered the chance to join indoor events such as aerobics, steps, body pumping and swimming.

The school took part in the vent as part of the National School’s Enterprise Week to raise money for a new sports kit and equipment for the sports hall.

Since the Olympic Games pupils have expressed an interest in developing several Olympic sports. The school hopes to use the money to develop trampoline activity, table tennis, volleyball and basketball.
