School’s growing efforts

A WORKINGTON school is being helped to grow vegetables by a town DIY store.
B&Q, on the Derwent Howe Industrial Estate, has donated a greenhouse to St Joseph’s Catholic High School.
The store was approached by the Harrington Road school’s food technology teacher Malcolm Mavin.
He said: “We have been looking at the idea of sustainability and growing vegetables seemed a great way to get more children involved in healthy eating. It’s a way to show how easy it is to grow vegetables and, hopefully, it will get the kids on board and have a positive effect for when they leave school.”
Mr Mavin plans to grow vegetables, including courgettes, leeks and potatoes, in the greenhouse.
Allerdale council has also donated two compost bins so food waste can be reused.
It is hoped that the greenhouse will be built before Christmas.
