MINERS made an emphatic start against Cockermouth. The visitors cranked up the pressure in the second half but were unable to contain their hosts.FRIZINGTON were denied three points after the ref gave a corner when everybody else felt it was a goal kick.SILLOTH lost out at home as Longtown’s Craig Thompson fired the only goal of the game. Cockermouth also went down at home as Whitehaven Miners proved too strong, Martin Thompson hit the consolation goal, John Ryan Milburn, Adam Slattery and Ryan Taylor struck for Miners.
For the first 10 minutes Cockermouth’s defence absorbed wave after wave of pressure. Then a corner ball fell to Rhys Miller who side footed it high over the keeper.
Then, just before the break, Ben Graham struck a long curving ball into the roof of the net.
Miners came out strongly again in the second half, and after five minutes Patrick Cowman capitalised on a clearance by the Cockermouth goalie.
Minutes later Lewis Jolly broke away on a solo run, which he managed to con-vert.
Cockermouth’s goal came from a shot by Jonathan McGrath which Matthew Sempill attempted to deflect, but it shot into the net.
As Cockermouth got into their stride goalie Thomas Fowler was forced to make a tremendous save, tipping the ball round the post.
Sempill redeemed himself in the dying moments of the game with a good long shot to make the final score 5-1.
From the resulting corner Wigton scored and that left Stephen Carruthers and Briggs fuming.
Stephen Lee fired Frizington in front with his second in as many weeks. Wigton drew level but Ryan Sisson fired the home side back in front.
However, Harriers drew level from that corner – not the result they wanted going into the County Cup match with Workington.
Division one action saw Parton United get back to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Hearts of Liddlesdale.
David Hodgson scored twice as he hit one for each team. Ryan Brunton and Kyle Jenkins Young netted the others for Parton while the Hearts strike came from Stephen Redford.
The battle of the saints went Margaret’s way as St Bees lost out at home by the odd goal in five. Phil Hetherington netted all three for St Margaret Mary’s with two coming from the penalty spot.
Whitehaven AFC are setting the pace in division one as the defeated Windscale 3-0, Gary Hewer, Stephen Priestley in the first half and Barry Ferlong added one in the second.
Netherhall hit a battling Bransty Rangers side for six in the CVR Whitehaven Cup as Nick Holden netted three, Chris Dawes added two and Shaun Smith added the sixth.
