New head for Maryport infant school

THE new headteacher at Maryport’s Ellenborough and Ewanrigg Infant School is a familiar face around school.
Wendy Hazzard was appointed acting head at the start of the school year, before her position was made permanent this week.
Mrs Hazzard had taught at Westfield Infant School in Workington for nearly 30 years and continued to work there after it merged with its junior school in 2002.
She was born and bred in Workington, where she lives with partner Brian and sons Mark, 16, and Liam, 12.
Mrs Hazzard said she had never wanted to be a headteacher but the thought of having her “own” infant school was enough to convince her to apply for the Maryport post.
She said: “The atmosphere in the school is lovely and I have been made so welcome by staff, parents, governors and the children.”
She said she plans to continue with the work started by previous head Jose Hodgkins to raise standards while making the school a warm, caring place for children to learn.
