Landmark hotel to be bulldozed
Last updated 11:25, Monday, 01 December 2008
A ONCE luxurious hotel in Workington is likely to be demolished after a fire there on Tuesday night.
The Westlands Hotel is now owned by the Executive Care Group, which owns the Branthwaite Residential Care Home next door to it.
Nobody from the company was available for comment, but a spokesman for Allerdale Council said that following discussions with the company the hotel will be demolished.
The Westlands Hotel, on Branthwaite Road, was built in 1972, when it was also visited by the Queen.
In 2002, it became Cumbria’s first table dancing club, called Cabaret of Angels.
When the blaze broke out on Tuesday, 18 fire-fighters were at the scene but the poor condition of the building meant they could only tackle the fire from outside.
