Former Workington Town coach Peter Walsh believes the good times could be just around the corner for his old club.

Walsh made a triumphant return to Derwent Park at the weekend, with the touring Australian Fijians, as they won 42-6 in a shortened game, due to freezing fog.

But he believes that there is plenty of talent in the ranks at Town and that they can climb back up the league ladder and reward the loyal fans.

He said: “The people of Workington are rugby league-mad and they are all crying out for success and hopefully that is just around the corner.

“The team can get back up there and give the spectators a really good time.

“They were always up against it against the Fijians and the conditions were appalling. It was the coldest ever.

“But it is a start and I am sure Dave Rotheram has something to work with and with a bit more luck with injuries they should be very competitive.”

Walsh, who led Town to their Premiership success back in 1994 and on to the inaugural Super League, was delighted with the reception he got on his return to his former haunt.

The Town legend accompanied the team as an assistant and consultant to head coach and AFRL president James Pickering, another Town great, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame during his visit.

Walsh added: “It was tremendous for both myself and James, we have had a great two days here, catching up with a lot of old players, officials and friends we made 16 years ago.

“It has been brilliant coming back. Saturday night’s dinner for James was just superb.”
