Title race hots up in Cockermouth snooker

THE title race in division two of the Cockermouth & District Snooker League has really tightened up.

The result of the week was Derwent B’s excellent 5-1 home win against last week’s top team Workington Legion.

With just over half the season gone this sees the Keswick team secure a spot in the top four and close the overall gap on the top team to just two points.

The match saw notable victories from Keswick players Chris D’Leny and Andrew Austin against Eric McMullen and G Fitzwilliam respectively.

Elsewhere in division two start Maryport Social B had a 6-0 win in their match against Glasson, a result that has seen them climb to the top of the table on a better frames against aggregate over Workington Legion.

The tie of the night was between two of the division’s top players, Maryport Social B’s Paul Lister and Glasson’s Dave Chapman. Unfortunately this did not quite live up to its billing with the Social player winning the frame convincingly 67-13, including a 31 break.

Station Road also trounced Flimby by the same scoreline this adding to Flimby’s earlier season misery in which they only won one frame in their previous encounter.

Result not received from Brigham v Trades Hall.

In division one Railway Club dented their title hopes with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Elbra.

The match started in a positive fashion for Railway with a win from Kevin Basnett against Martin Murray but through sheer determination the Maryport outfit ground out a victory with the top break of the night coming in the battle of the Littles, a 26 from G Little against Railway’s David Little.

Table leaders John Street proved yet again why they are the team to beat with a crushing 6-0 win against Derwent A.

Another disappointing result for the Lakesiders against John St this season which has seen them not win a single frame in their two meetings.

They were two significant offerings during the evening, first coming from John St’s Steven McLeod, a 26 break in his victory against Trevor Hildreth, and a 71 break from break aggregate leader Peter O’Hagan against Derwent’s John Thwaites. O’Hagan has now notch up 11 breaks over 25 in 12 matches played.

In another one-sided encounter Senhouse B flattened Clifton 6-0, their second defeat by the same scoreline in as many matches, with the only consolation coming in the form of a 27 break from Clifton’s captain Richard Nelson in his frame against A Aitken.

Seaton Legion v Senhouse A produced a 4-2 win for the home team, a result that put an abrupt end to run of five defeats from the Legion team and one that surely keeps their top-four hopes alive.

n There will be a meeting on Monday in the Station Road Club at 7. 30pm to allow anyone to put their case forward for matches not played. All competition draws will also be made.
