Pointing the way to a charming day at the races
Last updated 01:31, Friday, 07 March 2008
ONE of the highlights of the Cumbrian equestrian calendar takes place this weekend with the Cumberland Farmers Point-to-Point at Bridge End, Dalston.
Organisers say this is the countryside’s own form of racing and its great charm is that it gives horses and their owners an insight into the racing game without having to go professional.
Two hundred horses are entered this year, so the nine races promise exciting sport from kick-off at 1pm. Local trainer Jackie Williamson has four horses entered, two in the Members’ Cup and one each in the men’s and women’s races.
“The Dalston point-to-point is definitely one of my favourites,” she said.
‘I’ve been going every year for about the past 10 years and I wouldn’t miss it. The John Peel is the big race of the day and it always attracts really good competition. Everyone wants to win it.”
Local riders did well at Greenlands’ latest Senior BSJA day, taking home most of the ribbons.
The ever-improving partnership of Chrissie Cameron and Rosmalen Red Alert came up trumps in the British Novice, while Katie Walker and Cassius Z had to be content with two seconds, in the Novice and Discovery.
Richard Nichol and Foxwood Hawkwind were popular winners of the 1.05 Open, while Logan Creighton took first and second in the 1.10 Open with Oldlands Calypso and Plassey Cavalier.
Adele Anderson and Rollover Clover put on a great display in the Foxhunter/1.20 and 1.30 classes, giving Nigel Springer and Tato some real competition, but just narrowly missing out on the red rosettes.
Sticking with matters BSJA – and some good news from the Sunshine Tour of Portugal – Area 14 member Rachel Walker got off to a great start, jumping double clears on her six-year-old Velica and earning a placing in the 1.30m classes. She finished off the weekend by taking third in the 1.30m.
Area 14a member Simon Buckley has also picked up several places and a fifth on his nine-year-old grey gelding Worrior van Dingeshof in the 1.45m Grand Prix on Sunday.
Back home, Nicole Murry proved a hard act to beat at Inglewood, winning the 55, 65 and 75 cm classes with Jenson and Twilight Treacle.
The highest class of the day, the 95cm, went to Laura Graham on Ruby.
The centre is holding working hunter training on April 2 and 3 with Gillian Wright and Denise Richardson so anyone interested should contact Val Braithwaite at Inglewood.
Kingwater staged another very successful Showing Show, the Overall Championship going to Louise Maxwell with Lochhill Tabitha Twitchett and the Reserve to Angela Scott with Crackerjack.
The CFHS Pony Club branch Pre-Area Dressage Open Competition at Greenlands on the 26th of this month has proved so popular that a second day’s been added. It’s called Introduction to Dressage – Open Competition and is specifically designed for people who are new to dressage or riders with novice ponies who would just like to have a go. It’s also open to other PC branch members and non-members.
