Two Comets make British U21 final

WORKINGTON Comets’ young guns Joe Haines and Charles Wright have both qualified for the British U21s final.
Two of the riders, who have been causing concern with their early-season form, got through from the first qualifier held at King’s Lynn on Wedneday night.
Haines was joint top scorer in the meeting, winning four of his five rides after being second in his first outing, and he went on to win the final.
Wright, who had to get through a semi-final to make the final line-up finished third after Andrew Tully had fallen.
Tully, who like Haines had scored 14 points in the main meeting, slid off and in trying to avoid him Wright also came down. The race was awarded with Newcastle’s Sean Stoddart given second.
Haines, Stoddart and Wright will go through to the final at Lakeside on April 25 with Tully the meeting reserve.
Workington team manager Ian Thomas had expressed concerns over the form of the reserves and second string following defeats against Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Thomas said: “I’m absolutely delighted to see the two lads qualify for the final. This will give their confidence a major boost and that can be a big factor.”
Haines and Wright will be back in action against Tully on tomorrow when the Monarchs visit Derwent Park for a Premier Trophy match (7pm start).
