What a year it has been for salmon

Continuing my look back over 2008’s angling highlights, in July John McClay, from York, landed a superb 20lb salmon on the Low House beat of the river Eden near Armathwaite.

AS the year draws to a close, let’s take a look back over the local piscatorial highlights of 2008, starting in January when Mark Garret of Keswick landed the first Eden salmon of the season at Warwick Hall when he hooked a sea liced 8½lb Springer.

THIS is a difficult time of the year for anglers of all disciplines. The recent cold snap has seen all but the larger still waters freeze over and the calm weather accompanying the frosts has done nothing to improve the sea angler’s lot. Night tides are probably giving the best chance of sport along the Cumbrian coastline during the recent doldrums.

Recently, I mentioned that Harrington Sea Angling Cub’s annual cod open was a great success with good cod catches, after worries about the lack of cod along the Cumbrian coastline this autumn.

MIKE Grimes stopped the traffic on the Great Corby road on Saturday afternoon as a crowd of spectators built up eager to see the results of the epic battle unfolding in the Church Pool on the Yorkshire Fly Fishers beat of the river Eden at Warwick Bridge.
