Going to school - in the holidays
Last updated at 11:44, Thursday, 29 July 2010
CHILDREN from across Whitehaven were treated to a week of activities during a summer school.
Whether the youngsters were into sports, cooking, arts or canoeing, there was something for them to enjoy.
The week-long summer school is aimed at children who are due to start Whitehaven School in September.
June Hardisty, head of Year 7, said: “The summer school has been set up as part of our transition programme. The idea is to bring children together who are going to be in the same form groups.
“It’s beneficial for them to get a feel of the school. It’s about building friendships and giving them a flavour of what’s to come.”
The group of 60 children have taken part in a whole host of sports activities from rugby, cricket, dodge ball to arts and cookery.
Mrs Hardisty added: “A lot of the children liked the steel drums workshops and this is something we will offer the children as an after school club.”
The school has worked in partnership with Connexions, Young Cumbria and the Youth Harbour Project to hold the activities.
