Churn back the years

MILK deliveries in Egremont as they used to be. This nostalgic scene, captured on March 3, 1948, is of farmer and milkman John Jenkinson of Winscales Farm, near Egremont out and about on his morning round, with his milk cart being pulled by his faithful old horse Bobby.
In those days, milk was sold ‘on draught’ from the wide-bottomed churn. The location is not identified – but the late Mr Jenkinson’s round was in Egremont and district. The identity of the boy in clogs is also not known.
The photo was found in an album belonging to Mrs Margaret Wilson of Beckermet, who was house-keeper at Winscales Farm from 1935 to 1960. She died in March at the age of 92.
