Clubs set for cup final fever

CUP final fever will hit West Cumbria amateur rugby league this weekend with two of the region’s sides in action in showpiece games.

Wath Brow Hornets travel to Blackpool on Saturday for their Ace Insurance (Europe) Barla National Cup final clash with East Hull.

The Brow are set to take an army of fans to Fylde RUFC (3.15pm kick-off) for what will be their third National Cup final in five years.

They were successful on the previous two occasions, in 2004 and 2005, and will be hoping for more of the same on Saturday.

But before that, Kells face Seaton Rangers in the final of the SJR Builders Cumberland Cup on Friday at Maryport (7pm kick-off).

It is the first of two finals in the space of a week for Kells, who face Ellenborough Rangers in the Top Four final the following Friday, and coach Peter Smith says his squad is in good shape.

“Apart from Alan McGuiness, who has a long-standing injury, we’ll be at full strength,” says Peter.

“We have to be confident and fancy our chances against Seaton, but they will also be looking to end the season with some silverwear.

“We have beaten them twice in the league this season but that doesn’t necessarily count for anything when it comes to cup games. It’ll definitely be a hard game and we will need to be on our toes.

“With two cup finals in a week, we could end with two trophies, one or finish the season empty-handed.

“But if it’s a decent night on Friday, we should get a sizeable crowd and hopefully a good game to match.”
