Mambo into first at Snow Hill trails
Last updated 10:46, Friday, 15 August 2008
THE HTA Premier Trails at Snow Hill produced a great afternoon’s trailing although a poor weather forecast and a very wet morning kept the attendance down.
Things brightened up, however, and those who stayed away missed an entertaining and interesting event.
There were anxious eyes on the clock for the seniors and trail was called just before the hounds came to the road.
One Man is not noted for his finishing, but this time he stuck in and held off Dairy One by just a head, with Some Girl a close third.
Mayfair and Halloween both tripped up near the road and lost valuable ground, finishing fourth and fifth, with Top Man in sixth.
One Man is trained for Billy Birkett by George Booth of Gawthwaite while Billy himself is responsible for Top Man.
There was a close finish for all the places in the senior maiden trail, but finally Lena and Edward Gibson’s Gendarme just had a neck to spare in front of Outrageous and Lazonby Lad.
Arthur and Irene Temple maintained their major trail reputation when Dairy Song moved up a gear coming up the hill to the tape to beat Levi and Cinnabar comfortably for her third puppy success.
Cracking This (owned by the Mellon, Pattinson and Airey partners) didn’t seem very keen on finishing in the puppy maiden trail, but she straightened herself out and got over the tape three lengths in front of Westgate Tally, with Patchy Mist in third.
It was good to see the open non-winners class having a chance of big prize-money, and the leaders came in a close-knit group.
Honcho ran a little wide, and Wayward Lad nipped over the line for a win for Ike and Sheila Walker.
Biggest slip of the day was in the open restricted, with 64 runners. There were plenty in with a chance on the finish, but it was the black Wigton hound Mambo, owned by Jackie Pattinson and Alannah Smith, who got his nose in front, beating Arctic Summit and Waltzing Matilda to claim the trail for the host area.
The trophies were presented by HTA Chairman Roy Laidler, and thanks are due to all those who worked so hard to make the day a success.
The puppy show was judged by Stephen Fincher, and the results were:
Dogs – 1, Michael Oldcorn’s Westgate Ruler x Toffee Girl; 2, Chantelle and Courtney Hope’s Dairy One x Kinniside Jet; 3, Darren McMaster’s Westgate Ruler x Toffee Girl.
Bitches – 1, Wendy Martin’s Monty x Martoya; 2, Elliot Church’s Honcho x Birkby Phantom; 3, Lynn Pawley’s Westgate Ruler x Toffee Girl.
There were 46 entries for the Tipster Competition and it ended -. 1st - Lynn Pawley (22 points); 2nd, Ian Rumney (20); equal 3rd, Jim Batty and Lynn Pawley (18).
Just missing out were James Murphy and Norma Reay (17); Duncan Chisholm (16); Dennis Allison and Tony Roper (15).
The next big meeting on the agenda will be the Whitehaven Classic on August Bank Holiday Monday.
The battle for the senior championship has really intensified over the last few weeks with three title winners in the leading four who are separated by just three points.
After Monday night reigning champion Westgate Kyza led the way with 14, just ahead of Show Girl (13) with the 2006 champion Dairy One on 12 and the 2006 puppy champion Mayfair on 11.
It really is set-up for a thrilling finish to the season between these four well-matched hounds.
The race for the puppy title still seems to be a shoot-out between long-time leader Habana (25) and nearest pursuer Cracking That (23) who have a nice lead over Bluebird (15).
Looking back at the week we start on Wednesday where Habana notched an important victory at Cartmel Show. Wight youngsters were slipped and Habana led in the only three to finish.
Cock How Festival winner Ben’s Girl was a popular victor in the open restricted while Salsa had got the better of Gigolo in the opening senior trail.
They were also at Cold Fell Gate on Wednesday where Whitby Steps ran a great race for Jack and Rhona Watson to beat Halloween and One Man by ten yards.
In the pups Courtesy, for the Jackson, Loan and Smith partnership, overtook Tell Tale just before the line to claim the red rosette.
The open maiden concerned the first four who were close together. It was Meadow Izzie, for Paul and Joanne Airey, who came from third place on the whistle to beat Sunlight, Wayward Lad and Cathy by a couple of lengths.
There was a close finish for all the places in the open restricted but Highwayman (Sheila Walker and Alwyn O’Neill) just got in ahead of Butterfly and Pinfold Skye.
Christine Brownlee seems to have her hounds in good trim at the moment and she had a first and third at Ings on Thursday with Momento and Misty split by Clayton.
Only four ran in the pups where Huntsman’s Dazzler continued to show good form by beating Tower Lass with Negress back in third.
Dean attracted some useful hounds on the same night with two of the title-chasers clashing in the opening senior trail.
Show Girl cut Westgate Kyza’s lead to a point when she got the better of the champion in a good race to the line.
Likewise in the pups Cracking That made inroads on Habana’s lead when she beat Bluebird in good style.
Eleven contested the open maidens where victory went to Merry Legs from Faithful.
We’ve had a busy Monday with three meetings taking place at Colton, Parsonby and Wasdale Head.
Habana only had two rivals to beat at Colton in the pups and the table leader made it win number 25 without too many problems.
Momento carried-on her great run of form for Christine Brownlee, winning the senior trail from Sovereign while Paradox took the open restricted.
Over at Parsonby’s Momento’s sister Mayfair continued her relentless charge towards the leaders in the championship and captured an important scalp in Show Girl.
Bluebird is very much the outsider of three in the race for the puppy crown but she chalked-up win number 15 when she beat My Girl in the junior trail.
The veteran Clarity won the open maidens from High Patrol and Cathy.
At Wasdale Head the two leaders in the senior trail had come well clear but Lady of War made a mistake at a wall and Westgate Ruby forged well clear. In the pups it was Dairy Sound who took control and went on to win by 12 yards from Della.
Genesis is an old-stager over this course and showed that by winning the open rest-ricted by 15 yards from Miter-dale in a small field of five.
Rydal Hound show and trails have been cancelled to-day (Thursday) because of the state of the ground.
