Farmers look to educate public about rural life
Last updated 16:08, Wednesday, 03 September 2008
FARMERS are helping to break down any perceived barriers between the public and the farming community by throwing open their gates to the public.
Through The Cumbria Farmer Network, a number of farms are opening for special walks to the general public.
These farms are not normally open to visitors and they provide a unique insight into the working of commercial farms in the Lake District and surrounds.
The next one will be on Sunday, September 7, at 1.30pm at Fornside in St Johns in the Vale.
Those wishing to go on the walk are advised to wear walking boots and take some refreshment with them.
To book a place on the walk email carol-douglas@fld.org.uk.
The Farmer Network organises several walks each year for the general public on working farms, some with Friends of the Lake District and some independently.
The network’s aims include:
to maintain and develop a viable farming community
maximise rural income via food production & other activity
support, inform and educate
raise the profile of Cumbrian farming.
