Memorial trails an instant hit
Last updated 09:56, Thursday, 18 September 2008
THE first memorial trails for Michael Renney were an instant success – despite the organisers being forced to switch venues.
Instead of trailing against Greenlands, after a break of seven years, the hounds headed for Dearham and support was excellent.Ten bookmakers stood on the day – which would certainly have pleased Michael – although the way their satchels were emptied during the afternoon might have produced a different reaction!
A good crowd; improving weather as the day went on; some top hounds taking part and some exciting finishes all added up to an enjoyable and worthwhile exercise in memory of a good hound trailing man.
Area chairman Geoff Irving said: “We made over £700 profit and that will be divided among some local charities as Michael would have wanted.”
Reigning champion Westgate Kyza took another stride towards retaining the title when he held off champion-ship rival, Mayfair, whose str-ong challenge appears to have tailed off in the last fortnight.
Mayfair made a mess of the last fence and Kyza went aw-ay to beat Rhinestone Cowboy as Mayfair faded into third.
Apart from Show Girl all the leading hounds were there to take each other on which was good to see.
High Patrol was quietly fancied in some quarters for the maidens and those who took the plunge were rewarded after a good battle with Brad the Lad for the major honours.
The top pups were entered for the junior trail but it was the form junior Levi who finished very strongly to beat Tarantino with good hounds in Cracking That, Dairy Song and table leader Habana filling the next three places.
Random Star took advantage of mistakes from his main rivals in the puppy maidens and won nicely from Reuben and Foxparke Lady Jean.
Biggest gamble of the day was reserved for the open restricted where Busy Time was up to the job in hand and beat Waltzing Matilda well.
Two of the top veterans fought out the finish of the last trail but it was always Outrageous who had the better of things and won well from Clarity.
Three of those winners had also collected red rosettes at Dean last Tuesday where we open our look back.
This time Westgate Kyza beat Some Girl to underline his credentials as a likely champion; Levi again beat good hounds in Negress and Cracking That while Outrageous beat his old rival Clarity in the veterans.
The different winners was in the open restricted where Speculation got the better of Lambrini and Kelly-Mac.
On Wednesday at Shap Summit Show Girl took the senior trail from Gwiazda and the kennel completed a double with Darling in the pups. Both had won at the previous meeting a week earlier. Superseven won the open restricted from Ben’s Girl and Sycamore.
They were also at Crag Farm on Wednesday and Westgate Ruby was an impressive winner of the senior trail. She showed with about two lengths lead over Hot Fuss and despite being pushed all the way still had the same in hand on the line.
It was a similar story in the puppy trail where Razzmatazz also beat Tell Tale by a couple of lengths after a good struggle.
Four were seen with a chance in the open restricted but it was Gendarme who had the edge in the end, beating Westend Bond by a length.
Thursday’s meeting was at Calebreak and both Dairy One and the impressive Huntsman’s Dazzler were good winners of the senior and puppy trails.
The closest finish was in the open restricted where Josie just beat Matty Brown.
Shap Summit was well attended on Sunday where Show Girl and Darling completed a treble of wins at the venue. Show Girl came with a nice lead and won easily from kennel-mate Some Girl, with Halloween very close behind in third place.
Darling also won easily, again sprinting up the finish to beat Fell Dancer and Della.
Puppy Cinnabar took on the open restricted opposition and had no difficulty beating Ben’s Girl and Matty Brown easily. Cinnabar had finished third in the midweek puppy trail over the Shap Summit course.
On Monday at Crag Farm the midweek senior winner Westgate Ruby was only a poor fourth but Wednesday’s runner-up Hot Fuss went one better, coming home nicely to beat Miss Dido by 15 lengths.
The same two pups fought out the finish of the junior trail and again it was Razzmatazz; who had two lengths to spare over Tell Tale at the tape.
There were four hounds in with a chance at the finish of the open restricted trail and Tearaway Lady came through best of all to beat Westend Bond by two lengths.
On Tuesday, Keswick’s Old Golf Course proved to be a well supported meeting.
In the seniors Jimmy Quick won by 10 yards from Howgill Sandy, and they were well clear of the rest.
Huntsman’s Dazzler continued his fine run of form and was five lengths in front of Courtesy, who was a similar distance in front of Tower Lass, in the puppy trail They were well clear, having got away best on the way out to the fell.
Eden Russet won the open maidens just nicely in a good finish for all the tickets.
Outrageous was on its own in the veterans, a long way clear of Super Hero in a field of nine.
They were back at Dearham on Tuesday night where Westgate Kyza just got up to beat Rhinestone Cowboy and open up a handy lead at the top of the senior table.
Levi was looking to add another puppy trail to his increasing tally but he was beaten this time by Dairy Song with the table leader Habana back in sixth.
Young Darren McMaster was catching Fugitive for Keith Lynch in the open maidens and had to shout it home to beat his mother’s hound Rough Diamond in second. There’s family loyalty for you!
I’ve been asked to put in the following message from Pip, Jayne, Kay, Michael and Suzanne and family who would like to thank people for their kind support in the recent sudden death of Ann Oldcorn.
“We apologise for not thanking you earlier as things have been a bit hectic of late. Ann played a large part in helping run the Ulverston Area and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
“Once again thank you to the people who have helped us (you know who you are) over the last few weeks to run the trails as without your help we probably wouldn’t have survived, this tragic time. Sincere thank you.”
Also with regard to the Ulverston Area, can all the Presentation Evening Trophies be returned to Jayne Petersen by the end of September.
