Snow, showers and sun for season opener

THE 2008 Championship season opened at Askam-in-Furness on Saturday when the weather was a mixture of snow, showers and sunshine.

Top dog: John Graham with David Hogg’s Levi, puppy winner at Kirkbride on Sunday

This didn’t deter people travelling to one of the most southerly venues in the Association. The 2007 season had ended in sadness for this couple, therefore this opening season’s win was well deserved for Norman and Lynn Brown and Joan Hutchinson with Magic Bay.

The Barrow hound finished well to take the spoils from Clayton with Gigolo leading the next group to take third.

Nick, Trisha and Yvonne Wilson and Roger Westmorland’s Habana continued to show great form to take the opening puppy trail from Newtown Clover and April Rain by a couple of lengths.

The open maiden trail was taken by Bill Benson’s five year old Lofty who beat Whitby Steps and Sycamore.

On Sunday, the scene switched to Kirkbride where 115 contested the four trails.

In the seniors, Some Girl showed just in front of Dairy One, but she increased her lead on the finish and won by 40 yards. These two were well clear of Alfresco and the chasing group, who were just nicely spaced.

There was an exciting finish to the pups. Aira Force came to the last obstacle in front, but missed her jump and was overtaken by both Levi and Faithful, who finished first and second, but all three were very close at the tape.

High Patrol was a comfortable winner in the open non winners, ahead of Congressman and Mambo, and these were a way clear of the rest.

A total of 48 hounds ran in the All-In, where Silver Stream held off the challenge of Dusty Hare, with Zenda a good third.

At Egremont on Monday there was a good battle in the senior trail before Dignity just got the measure of Lady Ryan’s to win by a couple of lengths.

The 15 pups struggled but Touched went on to beat Alles Springs.

Dairy Knight and Cameo dominated the open maiden trail and showed together. But before they settled to battle it out Cameo’s nose went down for a spot of hunting and Dairy Knight seized the initiative to win nicely.

They were back at Askam-in-Furness on Monday where Russell and Wendy Dawson’s three year old Miss Dynamite featured prominently throughout the race. She narrowly beat Saturday’s winner Magic Bay with One Man in third place.

Saturday’s puppy winner Habana continued to show great form by beating kennel mate Negress by 12 yards with litter sibling Claymore in third place.

Lynn Pawley, Martin Burrow, Donald Hodgson and Ronnie Bell pulled off a great gamble with Della winning comfortably in the non-winners trail from two year old Matty Brown with Foxparke Tiddleywink in third.

They were back at Kirkbride on Tuesday and Some Girl repeated her previous win, although this time she had kennel-mate Show Girl in behind.

There was only about a length in it and, in a few more yards, the fast-finishing Show Girl would have snatched it

Levi looked to be coming through again to win the pups but got hung up on the last fence which allowed Cracking That to win

In the All-In trail, contested by 54 runners, Magwa beat Congressman by half a length and these two were clear.

The three last March trials were on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the opening Championship meeting on Easter Saturday.

On Tuesday at Sandale, there was a double for Reg Smith with Amber and Alfresco.

In the pups, Amber came from well back to win while Alfresco had a good battle with Silver Stream before winning the senior trial.

On Wednesday at Kirkland, Bluebird finished very impressively to beat April Rain in a field of 33 pups. The seniors were led in by Dignity who comfortably beat Lofty in a big field of 52.

Back at Sandale on Thursday, White Diamond was a tidy winner of the pups from the fast-finishing Levi. Silver Stream beat kennel-mate Line Dancer by a length and a half in the senior trail.

Dickie Smithson of the Aspatria and Wigton Area would like to thank all those who supported the four successful Sandale trials.

Carolyn Hill would also like to offer her sincere thanks to all those who supported the junior Fun day at Kirkbride.

There was plenty of children for the face painting, as well as some adults, and the main results were as follows:- Egg Painting Competition – Up to 10-years - Chloe McHattie - judged by Joanne Airey, Over 10-years - Sarah Mackereth - judged by Margaret Baxter.

Guess My Name chick competition – it was called Sooty and the winner was Brian Shaw (BHTA). Watch this space for more activities!

Ian and Barbara Telford's Trust gained her fourth senior Border HTA championship win at Anthorn last Wednesday, when she beat Castle Thorn and Fire Glory.

Carol and Terry Spark’s Sparkling Pearl was the popular winner of the senior maidens from Blithe Spirit and Blaze.

Anna and Kerry Lindsay's Farm Time, winner of the last three puppy maiden races here, claimed his first puppy championship win from Summer Delight and Fire Ranger.

Favourite Templer was first over the line in the puppy maidens ahead of Gold Finger and Jackpot.
