BECKERMET WI

THERE were 11 paper-knives entered in the competition from 14 members who attended the meeting on April 9, at the Reading Room, Beckermet. Claude McGrabe, vice-president welcomed us and Jerusalem was sung.

Six members will attend Lamplugh “Peas, pies puds and poems” evening, on Friday.

We heard Doreen Head’s good report of the AGM in Carlisle, which announced Santon Bridge as the darts champions this year. Sadly our county chairman, Eileen Wilson, is retiring after 14 years. She was presented with a bouquet. Suggestions for how the county could celebrate its 90th birthday are needed.

Claude introduced Mark Smith from the Fire and Rescue Service. Mark has been a fireman for 15 years and goes into schools to help children be aware of how to prevent fires. He gave us a very professional presentation of the Fire and Rescue Service work, which involves working with other rescue services like the lifeboats and boats in the harbours. He was thanked by Margaret Mossop

Tea and biscuits with Betty Saxton and Elsie Jenkinson in charge of the brew followed. Betty then passed round some amusing photographs down loaded from her computer, and Elsie had prepared pictures of 12 local buildings to be identified.

The competition was won by Mary Blackburn, Beth Brown and Margaret, who had also provided the flowers for the president’s table.
