Quartets perform in Wasdale

A CONCERT in aid of the re-building fund for Nether Wasdale parish church of St Michael and All Angels will be held on Sunday, May 4 at the Low Wood Hall Hotel, Nether Wasdale.
Entitled Quartets in Wasdale, the evening will feature the Stonebridge String Quartet which includes Julian Cann and Jane Cull (violins), Allison Calderbank (viola), and Jeremy Lamburn (cello).
Music will include Haydn’s Quartet Op 64 No 5, The Lark, Borodin’s Quartet No 2 in D and Beethoven’s Quartet in C Op 59 No 3.
The concert will start at 7.30pm and tickets are £8 from Nether Wasdale PCC, Old Strands Cottage, Wasdale, Seascale, CA20 1ET (tel 019467 26258)
The annual string quartet concerts have previously been held in Nether Wasdale Church, which was badly hit by January’s bad storms, leaving a £65,000 repair bill. Proceeds will go towards the repair fund. Church services are being held in the Old School Room.
Also on the same weekend, Wasdale May Festival will be held and on Saturday, May 3, when Nether Wasdale’s maypole will be the focus of traditional dancing, brass band music, fancy dress, children’s sports and a community tea.
On Wednesday, May 7, at 7.30pm the Meadow Singers present old and new favourites in A Song In My Heart at St Mary’s Church, Gosforth. Tickets are £5 at the door and proceeds will be in aid of church and choir funds. The singers will be accompanied by Tony Kirkham and directed by Helen Cain.
Egremont Parish Church, celebrating its 125th anniversary is holding an evening of light entertainment, performed by Whitehaven and District Operatic Society, at the church hall on April 18 at 7.30pm. Admission £2.
