MOOR Row Jubilee Club chairman, John Allonby, opened the meeting on April 1, and David Simpson, secretary reported a welcome donation of £300 from the Co-operative Community Fund.
Club member, Grace Wordsworth gave a most interesting talk, and display of beads. Her collection of beaded articles was numerous, some hand-made.
There were candle holders, necklaces, pictures, broaches, evening bags, even Christmas baubles.
She said the Egyptians and Romans made theirs from clay, bone and metal, and showed a book of their artistic work.
Grace judged a competition of members beaded items, awarding Cissie Sanderson first prize for her hand-made picture, and Helen Allonby second prize for showing some black Victorian clothes studded with beads.
Pat Graves modelled the bonnet, shoulder cape, and apron, and Mavis Rothery modelled a long evening coat of impressive Victorian fashion.
Kath Mounsey thanked Grace for “A fantastic display and talk.” Members were informed of an exhibition at Egremont Market Hall, on May 28, about Crime Prevention. A collection of £33 was given to an Age Concern representative, to sponsor her in the London marathon, for Age Concern.
Raffle winners were Matty Jaynes, Lawrence Graves, Helen Allonby, and Doreen Flitton.
The social meeting on March 18 took the form of a good meal, catered for in the club.
The Easter raffle was also drawn. The speaker, Mr Mapleton, from Cockermouth, gave an interesting talk on the Post Office’s history, showing old photos, including one of Moor Row Post Office.
An old Post horn was part of his memorabilia, which he demonstrated.
The chairman, John Allonby, gave the vote of thanks.
