Festival offers free fun

A CHILDREN’S treasure hunt, women-only navigation courses and mountain biking lessons are just some of the free activities on offer at the third Ullswater Walking Festival this month.

And that’s on top of the dozens of guided walks planned between Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 18.

Lake District National Park volunteer rangers will lead walks on Beda Fell, Hallin Fell, Moor Divock, Pikeawassa and Arthur’s Pike, and visit Grisedale, Fusedale, Aira Force, Red Tarn and the Greenside Mines.

Mountain guide Veronica Dunn will lead the classic ascent of Helvellyn via Striding Edge on Monday, May 12 and Saturday, May 17.

Veronica is also conducting several navigation courses. Women-only courses start from Pooley Bridge on Tuesday, May 13 and Aira Force on Sunday, May 18. There is also a mixed class on Thursday, May 15.

Cyclewise Training will provide skills lessons for people wanting to know more about mountain-biking.

Anyone keen to learn how to take better pictures on the fells can join a special day-long photography event on Tuesday, May 13.

A morning walk, during which members of Penrith Camera Club will explain how to take better pictures, will be followed by an afternoon computer workshop on how to get the best from your pictures.
