EGREMONT-BASED Alan Bowness returned to his old stomping ground on Saturday afternoon to register a remarkable 11th course win, in the annual Kinniside Fell Race.
The popular fellsman, now aged 44, has been out of full-time running for a number of years, but remains a hard man to beat.
The race, held as part of the 64th annual Cleator Moor Sports, is a fast and furious dash up and down Dent Fell, and features 1,000ft of ascent.
The Kinniside was a counter in the annual Club Championship of local outfit Cumberland Fell Runners, so useful mid-season points were on offer for members.
Conditions were favourable after a downpour the day prior to the sports, but a disappointing 24 runners chose to turn out on the day.
Chris Knowles (CFR) ran a fine race in defeat behind Alan, to take the runner-up spot ahead of Joe Blackett who made the long journey cross country from Middlesbrough to take part.
Teenager Peter Harrison, from Border Harriers, ran well for fourth place just ahead of Egremont’s Darren Block (5th), and CFR Gavin Pattison (6th).
For the ladies, victory went to Jenny Chatterley, and well deserved club points for her efforts.
Arlecdon’s Willie Bell (CFR) secured the vet 50 plaudits with a top showing against the younger guys. Willie was an impressive 7th overall. Other CFR members to finish the course were, 8th Duncan Eastoe (2nd junior), 9th David Atkinson, 10th Jamie Rackham, 11th John Walker, 12th Paul Jennings, 14th Jamie Riley (3rd jnr), 15th Phil Halwley, 16th Richard Eastoe, 17th Mark Graham, 18th Roger Whitaker (1st vet 60), 19th Jenny Chatterley (1st lady), 20th Lindsay Buck (2nd lady), 21st Terry Lowdon, 23rd Dave Morgan, 24th Stevie Watson.
Twenty two juniors lined up for their seventh Championship race, at the Cleator Moor Sports, which involved a steep ascent and descent, a long run to the slopes of Dent Fell and two laps of the sports field.
The Under-8s kicked off the proceedings. Alexandra Walker was the first and only girl runner back in a time of 11:40.
Thomas Adams was the first boy home in 7:34 followed by Eughan Simpson in a well run 10:35
In the Under-10s race, Cerys Atkinson brought the girls home in 7:22, followed by Elsa Whelan in 10:40. Joseph Atkinson was first U10 boy returning in a time of 7:46 followed by Joseph Dugdale in 7:55 and Mark Brailey in 8:18.
The Under-12s were next off the line, following a longer course with the Under-14s. Niamh Hedley was the first girl back in a time of 14:34 closely followed by Lucy Whelan in 14:50.
David King was first U12 boy back in a time of 13:08 followed by Joseph Smith in 14:54, Kieran Riley in 15:10 and Phillip Jennings in 15:40
In the Under-14s girls race, Hannah Bethwaite of Ellenborough was the winner. Alice Rea was first CFR runner back in a time of 14:48.
William King won the boys’ race in a time of 10:48 closely followed by brother, Thomas, in 11:08 and Tom Wright in 11:32. Cieran Simpson and Jack Riley followed each other closely to finish in 16:08 and 16:20 respectively.
The Under-18s race followed the senior course, the Kinniside Two Tops, and Duncan Eastoe was first home followed well by Jamie Riley in second.
