Amateurs unlucky in treble quest
Last updated at 10:08, Thursday, 28 May 2009
WHITEHAVEN Amateurs were going for the treble as they contested the FOCSA Ken Glover Memorial Shield with Aspatria on Saturday - but it was not to be.
Aspatria had reached the final after a 2-1 victory over Netherhall, while Whitehaven AFC beat Cockermouth 4-0 to set up the final.
Whitehaven, playing on home soil, had already been crowned Tesco Division One champions and Divisional Cup winners, but Aspatria, who finished runners-up to Netherhall in the Premier league wanted their own double. It looked as though they were to be out done as it was Whitehaven who lead at the break, but Aspatria came out in the second half meaning business.
Whitehaven held out until Aspatria were awarded a penalty which they slotted away to draw level and that lifted them to score a second to lift the shield in front of the biggest crowd of the season for a final.
Whitehaven have offered the use of their ground to the league for next season and it’s one that will be looked at by the management committee next Sunday at their meeting.
A couple of league games were played on Saturday. Whitehaven Miners continue their poor form as they lost to Longtown 2-0.
Earlier that week on Wednesday they lost to Frizington Whitestar 5-1, Mark Smith 2, Graeme Carruthers, Dean Rodgers and keeper Luke Jackson netted his first of the season from the penalty spot.
Miners will bring their season and the league campaign to an end on Thursday night when they entertain Mirehouse in the final game of the season.
Champions Netherhall ended the season on a high as the beat Cleator Moor Celtic 3-1, Jamie Devine netted the consolation for the green and whites.
