Desire pulls out all the stops to win Bitch Produce

DESIRE was a popular winner of the 2009 Bitch Produce Stakes at Redmain on Saturday, rounding-off a successful spell for the Kentmere star.
In winning the main event on the card she was scoring her 12th win of the season and her fourth in eight days.
The trail produced a great finish between the favourite Desire, Mayfly and Mabel, who were all very close coming up the last field.
Mabel seemed to have the race at her mercy as she ranged alongside the other pair but she turned across Mayfly, taking rather too much interest in her rival.
From that point Desire, however, pulled out all the stops and showed what a quick finish she has as she made the line to record a fine victory.
The only downside was the subsequent disqualification of Mabel. Subsequently Foxparke Homeward Bound, who had run a good race, was moved up to third, ahead of Chardonnay, Cracking T’other and Foxparke Lady Margaret.
Lynn Pawley, one of a team of four who own and train Desire, said she was still walking on air 72 hours after the triumph.
“It’s a great feeling,” says Lynn who owns the daughter of Westgate Ruler/Toffee Girl in company with her partner Martin Burrow, as well as family friends Donald Hodgson and Ronnie Bell. Celebrations went on long into the night in Kentmere after Desire had given connections their best moment in the sport.
“We were hopeful, because she had been running well. This was her fifth win in six outings but she’s mainly shone on the fells and we weren’t sure how she would cope over fields and dykes.
“If she could be there on the finish with them we thought she would have a chance and that’s how it turned out.
“She’s been easy to train as she’s a natural. She just likes to get forward and seems to enjoy running.
“It’s too soon to talk about the championship. We’ll just hope she stays fit and we’ll take things as they come. A lot can happen between now and October,” says Lynn.
Incidentally Lynn has asked me to thank everyone who bought a ticket in the Sweepstake she ran for the Bitch Produce (rather like the one people do for the Grand National).
The winners were as follows: 1 Ken Kinsella, 2 Stanley Jackson, 3 Griff, 4 Fiona Dixon, 5 David Howson, 6 Griff.
Lynn says she will be doing another one for the Dog Produce in a couple of week’s time.
The meeting went off very well, and the early rain and mist quickly gave way to a fine afternoon. There was a good crowd and plenty of entries, though the seniors were rather slim with just 18.
Mayfair was sent off favourite and duly obliged. She was among the leaders at the top of the hill and then showed neat footwork in moving through the cattle which had gathered in a corner of the field.
When she had put that obstacle behind her she raced clear of the pursuers and went on to win by 50 yard from Alliance for her fifth success of the season.
In the senior maidens the cattle were again involved in the closing stages and as a result the pack gathered giving quite a lot of hounds a chance. In the end it was Jealousy who finished well to beat Kelly-Mac and Trebor by 10 lengths.
Arthur and Irene Temple’s hounds dominated the last two trails, Dairy Diamond (a non-produce bitch) beating Brannigan by 30 yards in the open pups, with the rest a long way behind, and Dairy Singer taking the open restricted by 10 yards from Jedburgh, with the camera need to decide that Velvet and White Diamond were third and fourth.
Incidentally there had been a lot of money for Jedburgh, according to one bookie one of the best backed dogs for some time.
Tom Newall presented a painting to retiring chairman Roy Laidler on behalf of all the area committees, and Roy then presented the first two trophies, the remainder being handed over by HTA Chairman Ian Beck.
The tipster competition on the Bitch Produce trail was won by Les Black with 26 points. He chose Desire, Mayfly and Chardonnay, and finished just a point ahead of Robert Airey and Dorothy Wilding, who had the top two plus Cracking T’other.
Bill Mellon’s selections were Desire, Cracking T’other and Dairy Pearl, earning him 20 points. There were 66 entries, and many ended up with 19 points from Desire and Mayfly.
There will be a full tipster competition at the International, with entries closing at 1.30 sharp.
The tipster competition for the whole season, up to and including Saturday, stands as follows:
Nicola McMaster 44, Tyler & Shauna Oldcorn, and Carole & Lynn 43, Lucy Pepper and Bill Huddart 42, Andrew Tyson, Florrie Tyson and Russ Dawson 41, Christine Brownlee, Gillian Simpson and John Oldcorn 39.
And while we are at it, Carolyn Hill has sent the latest junior standings up to June 9.
Junior competition – 1 Jackson Nicholson – Bluebird - 81pts; 2 Siobhan Swanton – Showgirl - 80pts; 3 Jenny Bland - Jenny’s Dream - 70pts; 4 Darren McMaster – Brannigan - 61pts; 5 Georgia Naylor - Miss Molly - 54pts; 6 Hannah Stevenson – Some Girl - 51pts.
Under 25’s – 1 Joe Fearon – Bluebird - 81pts; 2 Martin Rush - Hot Flush - 52pts; 3 Martin Rush, James McClellan - Hot Fuss - 49pts; 4 Martin Rush - Hot As Hell - 32pts; 4 James McClellan, Martin Rush – Owtback - 32pts; equal 4 Joanna Satterthwaite – Thorngirl - 32pts.
Of course with the Bitch Produce out of the way, the spotlight now switches to the International trails which are being staged at Millstone Moor on Saturday.
The Cockermouth Area moved in smartly to take over the organisation of the meeting after Aspatria and Wigton had to give back-word over Parsonby.
HTA vice-chairman Geoff Irving got permission from the farmer Neil Marsden and has taken on the responsibility of trail manager.
Unfortunately this year – which is a reflection on the financial state of the country – there will be no sponsors but the international committee decided not to make any reduction in the prize money and will come out of international funds.
The senior prize fund will be £600 and there’s £500 for the open pups. The four other trails all carry prizes worth £400 for each race.
New HTA chairman Ian Beck is sponsoring the extra £10 prize for the seventh hound home in each trail, while there will be prizes for the Irish and Yorkshire hounds competing.
No Irish hounds, however, have been entered although Yorkshire will be represented by six hounds – five in the open restricted and one in the senior maidens.
The total entries is only 12 short of last year so 364 are due to be slipped on the day.
There is one change to the programme of events from 2008. It was decided to run only one puppy maiden trail instead of the usual division between bitches and dogs, because of the reduction in puppy registrations for the season. Instead an open non—winners has been included to retain the six-trail format.
The HTA provides 304 of the entries – 25, open pups; 30, open non winners; 39, seniors; 82, senior maidens; 46, puppy maidens and 82, open restricted.
The Border Association will have four in the open pups; two in the open non winners; 12 in the seniors; 15 in the senior maidens; 11 in the puppy maidens and ten in the open restricted. The action gets underway at 1.30pm with the open puppies.
Looking back at the rest of the action during the week we start at St Helena on Wednesday where there was a double for Joe Fearon and his team.
Bluebird was scoring her ninth senior win of the season, going just one behind champion Westgate Kyza when beating No Chance by six lengths.
Kennelmate Blue Breeze completed the double in the pups, finishing strongly to beat Seagal by five lengths. Mal and Ann Reay, in fact, had second, third and fourth as Schwarzenegger 11 and Van Damme followed them in.
Southern Fun took the open restricted beating Sara’s Gift by four lengths with Uldale’s Lad not far behind.
The All-In trail went to Jedburgh by some ten lengths from Tearaway Lady, a performance which clearly encouraged Saturday’s big gamble.
On Thursday the trails were at Buttermere where Molly Malone repeated her impressive course win the previous week, this time beating Courtesy.
Desire had her final run before the Bitch Produce and made it a winning one when she beat Quiet Swift while Toytown was successful in the open maidens.
Trailing resumed after a fixture-less Sunday with Goosewell and St Helena on Monday.
The seniors at Goosewell went to fell specialist Westgate Ruby but she was given a hard fight by Huntsman’s Charm who pushed her all the way to the line. Misty was a close third.
Unfortunately the puppies got wrong just after the start and the void declaration was a formality.
Party Popper was strongly fancied to take the open restricted but in the end the finish concerned Crystal, who just had the edge on Della to win by three lengths.
Outrageous, Lofty and Lady of War had the veterans finish between them, although the order changed from going out of sight to coming back into view.
It looked to be between Outrageous and Lady of War but when they emerged from the firs battle had been joined by Lofty and Lady of War with Outrageous out of the equation.
In the battle to the line Lofty gained the upper hand and was a nice winner in the end.
At St Helena in the seniors Kinniside Dawn led from start to finish in a great exhibition of trail blazing and was some 25 lengths clear of Alliance at the line.
The pups went to Alyssa by some three lengths from Shiraz with Chardonnay close up on third as about 20 yards covered the front five.
The open maidens went to Last Chance who had three lengths on Foxparke Homeward Bound with plenty in with a chance.
